GIFTS OF PRIVACY FOR NICU PARENTS

(Rye, NY—September 20, 2010) When members of Hailey’s Hope Foundation heard that there were not enough privacy screens for all families to use in the Isaac & Naomi Kaplan Family Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, they responded.  On September 15, 2010, the members presented to the NICU staff a gift of six new hospital privacy screens to help the families there.

“When your baby shares a room with six, seven or even ten other babies, with no walls or curtains for separation, there is no physical space to be alone,” said Donna Zion, Hailey’s Hope Foundation Vice-President and former NICU mom.  “This lack of privacy is very awkward and frustrating.  With these screens, families can section off a small area around their babies’ isolettes or cribs to feed and bond with them in private and make the most of their precious time together.”   Nurse Manager, Susan Malfa, Assistant Nurse Manager, Lydia Delau, and LCSW, Julia Larkin (all pictured above), were delighted to accept this gift on behalf of the NICU staff and families and excited for the great comfort they would bring to many families.  Hailey’s Hope Foundation plans to make this gift on an ongoing basis until this need is satisfied.

Hailey’s Hope Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity established in memory of Hailey Zion, the infant daughter of Rye residents, Donna and Isaac Zion, who was born prematurely and passed away shortly after birth.  Its mission is to help families with premature and critically ill babies hospitalized in the NICU.   Its next fundraiser will be held in the Spring of 2011.   For more information, to donate or volunteer, please visit www.haileyshopefoundation.org or call (914) 584-8833.
